What is football crosses?

A football cross is a pass made by a player from the attacking team into the penalty area of the opposing team, with the intention of setting up a scoring opportunity for their team's forwards.

Crosses can be made from different parts of the pitch, with the best crosses usually coming from the flanks. The player delivering the cross will typically aim the ball towards the front of the goal, where their teammates can make contact with it using their head, foot or any other body part, in order to redirect it towards the goal.

The quality of a cross is determined by a range of factors, including the speed, spin, height, and accuracy of the delivery. Good crosses require good technique from the player delivering them, as well as good timing and positioning from the player attempting to make contact with the ball.

Crosses can be a very effective way of creating scoring chances, especially if a team has strong aerial players who can win headers in the penalty area. However, crosses can also be easier for defenders to deal with if the delivery is poor, or if the attacking team lacks players in the box to attack the ball.
